When Rocket Bunny Meets the 20B-REW RX7 FD3S
This RX-7 shown here is a perfect blend of fashion and performance, combining the famed rotary engine with the extreme body kit styling that Rocket Bunny is known for. Worthy of being shown to the public is this collaboration between Karn Fiber and CMZ Rotary Competition.
While this FD3S with its customised body kit, is very much a product of one’s own inspiration, it still comes across as blending in well with current trends, as well as being very well built. Of course, its creator has also imbued it with a sense of humour, being called the “Rocket Funny”.
Having lovingly fettled the bodywork, it was now time to work on the engine. CMZ Rotary Competition has comprehensively overhauled the engine, such that in place of the twin-rotor 1.3 litre engine is a three rotor engine measuring 1962cc in capacity.
Such a massive increase not only yields increased drivability from added low-range torque, it also serves to transform the car. As if that was not enough, a Garrett GTX 42 turbo was added in tandem with a customised C.M.Z. Rotary Competition intercooler, boosted to 0.9 bar with a westgate controller. A Rotary Work 90mm throttle body helps give the driver added ability to control the engine.
Following that, work was done to improve the fuel supply system, with a DW300 large displacement fuel pump and up-sized 1250cc fuel injectors. Acting as a pressure controller is the Mallory fuel regulator, while the Pertronix Flame Thrower HC aftermarket ignition coils and NGK spark plugs serve as icing on top of a very nice cake.
To cope with all that power, an ORC clutch, and Cusco limited slip differential is added to the stock five-speed manual transmission.
One final aspect of this build worth mentioning was that as the engine was rebuilt, CMZ Rotary Competition replaced the old engine seals with new Racing Apex ones, and bridge ported the rotary engine.
While this adds power, it is something rarely done for turbocharged rotary engines due to cost and complexity, so for CMZ Rotary Competition to take on this job, and pull it off is worth congratulating.
A 4-rotor rotary engine was first seen in 1991, when Mazda used it in their 787B race car, which famously won Le Mans in the same year. With the capacity of 2622cc, the engine produced 700 horsepower, heady numbers for a small block.
